Update
Lafayette, LA (January 19, 2025, 9:16 a.m.) – The Lafayette Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred on January 19, 2025, at approximately 12:18 am in the 1600 block of West Pinhook Road.
A preliminary investigation revealed that an SUV traveling eastbound in the inside lane struck a bicyclist operating a bicycle with an attached utility basket. Following the collision, the driver of the SUV fled the scene.
The driver, Darrel P. Whittington, a white 54-year-old male, was subsequently located in the 100 block of Rue Beauregard. The bicyclist, identified as Derrick Shane Miller, a white 49-year-old male, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Whittington was suspected of impairment and was arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on the following charges:
- Felony Hit and Run
- Vehicular Homicide
- Operating While Intoxicated (2nd Offense)
- Self-Mutilation by a Prisoner
The roadway has been reopened. The Lafayette Police Department Traffic Division is continuing to investigate this incident.

Incident:
- A vehicle struck a bicyclist in the 1600 block of W. Pinhook Rd.
- The driver of the vehicle has been located.
- Tragically, the bicyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Traffic Impact:
- All lanes of travel on the 1600 block of W. Pinhook Rd are currently closed.
- Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
Investigation:
- Traffic investigators with the Lafayette Police Department are actively investigating the incident.
