UPDATE: Homicide Investigation in the 100 block of Shirley Picard Road

LAFAYETTE, LA – Regarding the homicide on August 22, 2023, in the 100 block of Shirley Picard Road.  The Lafayette Police Department, along with the US Marshall’s Violent Offenders Task Force, have arrested the suspect responsible for the shooting, Johntay Hamilton (B/M/28) of Lafayette, Louisiana. The suspect was arrested and booked into Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a warrant for one count of second-degree murder and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.


LAFAYETTE, LA – Around 10:33 p.m. on August 22, 2023, Lafayette Police responded to a shooting in progress in the 100 block of Shirley Picard Road. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was later pronounced dead at the hospital due to his injuries.

The victim, identified as 18-year-old Deniro Broussard of Lafayette, was walking with a relative when the shooting occurred.  The victim was approached by the suspect and engaged in a verbal conversation.  The unknown suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim. The suspect left on foot in an unknown direction. Homicide investigators are currently on the scene gathering information and piecing together the facts. More information regarding this investigation will be released as it becomes available.
