Update August 10, 2023, 9:15 a.m.: South General Marshall Street Shooting
A Lafayette man is under arrest stemming from a Saturday morning shooting
that left one child dead and several others injured, including two Lafayette Police
Officers.
The suspect, 30-year-old John Nicholas of Lafayette, has been charged with the
following:
- 1 count, Domestic abuse battery – child endangerment (felony)
- 1 count, Battery of a dating partner – child endangerment (felony)
- 1 count, False imprisonment; offender armed with dangerous weapon (felony)
- 1 count, First degree murder (felony)
- 5 counts, Attempted first degree murder (felony)
- 1 count, Possession of Firearm by a Person Convicted of Certain Felonies
(Felony).
The incident happened at a residence in the 100 block of South General
Marshall Street in Lafayette as Lafayette Police Department Officers responded
to a 911 call regarding a fight in progress. One-year-old Kaci Cyprain was killed
during the incident. Two Lafayette Police Officers
August 6, 2023, 10:34 p.m. – Update on Injured Officers
Lafayette, LA – Both officers who were shot during the incident on South General Marshall Street on August 5, 2023, are continuing to recover. One officer remains hospitalized at this time and the other officer has been released and is recovering at home.

Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Investigating Officer Involved
Shooting
Lafayette, Louisiana – On the morning of August 5, 2023., the Lafayette Police
Department requested the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office assistance investigating an
officer-involved shooting at the 100 block of South General Marshall Street. During the
incident, two Lafayette Police Officer’s were seriously wounded. Other victims also
included an adult female and two children. One of the children later died at the hospital.
The suspect was also wounded. The victims remain in critical condition and are
continuing to receive medical treatment.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families as we conduct a
thorough investigation into the shooting.

August 5, 2023, 8:35 a.m. UPDATE
Update to Shooting Incident at the 100 block of S. General Marshall St.
Lafayette, LA – The Lafayette Police Department Officer (LPD) listed in critical condition has now been updated to be in stable condition. Both LPD Officers are now in stable condition and will remain under care at a local hospital as they receive medical treatment for their injuries.
Shooting Incident at the 100 block of S. General Marshall St.
Lafayette, LA – On 08/05/2023 at 02:14 a.m.
The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) responded to the 100 block of South General Marshall Street, Lafayette, Louisiana, about a fight in progress.
Upon arrival, responding Officers located a residence in the area in which the dispatched call had originated. As Officers made contact with the believed parties involved in the altercation, Officers were engaged in gunfire by the suspect. The suspect was able to fire gunshots upon and strike two uniformed LPD Officers. As a result of the suspect actively shooting and injuring two LPD Officers, an additional responding Officer was forced to engage the suspect by returning gunfire. It was later determined that three additional victims were struck by gunfire during the shooting incident.
The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently on scene and handling the Officer involved incident. Please refer to The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office PIO for all updates regarding the Officer involved incident.
The suspect was later taken into custody and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital for their injuries.
The suspect shot one LPD Officer multiple times and is currently in stable condition. Another LPD Officer was shot numerous times by the suspect and is currently in critical condition. Both Officers were transported to a local hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
LPD Investigators are on the scene and actively working on the incident that led up to the Officer involved incident. Any updates will be provided via an additional press release.
