UPDATE
LAFAYETTE, LA (September 1, 2024, 1:48 p.m.) — During this investigation, officers with the Lafayette Police Traffic Unit determined that an 18-wheeler was traveling Southbound on I-49 near Gloria Switch Overpass. The pedestrian was standing on the shoulder of I-49 and intentionally stepped into the roadway, directly in front of the 18-wheeler. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The pedestrian has died as a result of the injuries sustained after being struck by the 18-wheeler.

LAFAYETTE, LA (September 1, 2024, 10:47 a.m.) – The roadway is now open following this morning’s major vehicle accident on I-49.

LAFAYETTE, LA (September 1, 2024) – Lafayette Police are investigating a major vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on I-49 Southbound at the Gloria Switch Overpass that occurred at around 7:04 a.m. One person is in critical condition as a result of the crash. Investigators with the Lafayette Police Traffic Unit are on the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
Southbound traffic on I-49 is shut down and all traffic is being diverted to an alternate route. If you are traveling in the area, expect delays. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
