The Broussard Fire Department’s (BFD) mascot is Ember. Ember is a dalmatian who has been with BFD for about two years. Ember, who is three years old, was donated to the BFD by the Crowley Fire Department.

Dalmatians were once used to help keep horses in line, back during the days of horse drawn carriages used for fire departments.

Fire dogs such as Ember are not trained for rescue purposes. They do however help calm children. Dalmatians are protective dogs, help to clear streets and help to protect equipment.

Ember attends safety and training classes held at schools and day cares. She also goes to all public events and especially for events that involves children.

Ember lives with Fire Fighter Travis Romero and his family at night. During the day Romero takes Ember to the Fire Station for Ember to do her day of work.
