ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION NAMES LAFAYETTE TREE CITY USA
Lafayette, LA – For the 32nd consecutive year, the Arbor Day Foundation has named Lafayette a Tree City USA for the city’s commitment to having thriving urban forest management. “We are extremely honored to receive this recognition again this year. Trees not only beautify our city, but they are a valuable natural resource and are beneficial to everyone’s well-being,” said Community Development and Planning Department Director Mary Sliman.
Benefits of Trees (according to the Arbor Day Foundation)
- Helps absorb the sounds of traffic by 40 percent
- Shades buildings, reducing energy costs up to 25 percent
- Green space plays a role in improving mental and physical health
- Helps slow gas buildup in the atmosphere
Lafayette achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
