Successful Businessman and Community Leader Enters Race to Provide New Leadership for Lafayette, Iberia, and Vermilion
Conservative Sanders “Sandy” Derise (R-Youngsville) today announced his campaign for State Representative, District 49. The seat is being vacated by current State Rep. Blake Miguez.
“Having served as a paramedic, a police commissioner, and now the manager of a $2 million budget, I have truly seen and experienced it all. After serving my community and leading thousands of people in numerous leadership positions over the years, I am now ready to stand up for the hardworking citizens of District 49, listen to their concerns, and fight for their rights,” said Derise.
Born and raised in the small community of Jeanerette, Derise has worked for Superior Energy’s Stabil Drill division for the last 21 years. He began as a safety coordinator in his early career and gradually rose through the company ranks. Due to his proven leadership and dedication, he was promoted to his role as Vice President of Health Safety and Environmental. In this position, he was responsible for leading over 1,000 employees and overseeing a budget exceeding $2 million, demonstrating his qualifications to represent and lead a large group of people while strategically managing funds. He is now a sales manager for one of the Superior Energy divisions, Stabil Drill.
Aside from his proven ability to successfully manage a large company, Derise has also displayed a strong commitment to public service and involvement in his community. As a paramedic at Acadian Ambulance for seven years, Derise worked tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of local residents. He also served as the police commissioner of the Jeanerette Police Force, where he acquired a deep respect for law enforcement and an understanding of how to meet community needs.
Derise’s service to the community also included time in local government. He previously served as a Jeanerette City Councilman for seven years, overseeing the financial budget and working to cut wasteful spending. This experience emphasized to him the importance of fiscal responsibility and how to ensure tax dollars are wisely spent.
If elected, Derise will bring decades of unique experience and fresh ideas to the state legislature. He plans to strategically invest tax dollars to improve the region’s infrastructure, drainage, and local businesses to enhance District 49’s economy and quality of life.
“I am certain that my experience, combined with my heart for public service, will allow me to thrive in the State Legislature. Whether it is investing in local businesses or working together with lawmakers to improve our infrastructure, I know that I possess the knowledge and skills to help further economic growth and ensure the prosperity of our community,” said Derise.
Derise attended school in New Iberia before continuing his education at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He currently resides in Youngsville’s Sugar Mill Pond and has one daughter, Marae; a son-in-law, Eric; and one granddaughter, Scarlett.
