Baton Rouge, LA (February 5, 2025) – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces an update to its litter cleanup initiative, made possible by an additional $3 million in funding from the Louisiana Legislature. This project aims to improve the cleanliness and visual appeal of major federal highways across the state.

The initiative officially began last week in the New Orleans area, where crews have already collected more than 625 cubic yards of litter. In addition to litter removal, crews are also repairing damaged fencing, replacing signage and removing graffiti along state roadways.

In the coming months, residents throughout Louisiana can expect to see a concerted effort to remove litter from major interstates, including I-10, I-12, I-20, I-110 AND I-610.

For fiscal year 2024, DOTD committed approximately $13.6 million to litter pickup, reinforcing the state’s dedication to maintaining clean and safe roadways. This investment each year raises important discussions about resource allocation, as funds dedicated to litter removal could be utilized to support critical areas such as road improvements and transportation enhancements.

DOTD encourages all residents to play a role in keeping Louisiana litter-free by disposing of waste properly and participating in local cleanup efforts. For more information on how you can get involved, please visit www.keeplouisianabeautiful.org.
