On April 2, 2025 ARCA 3-5 Campus embraced World Autism Awareness Day with a celebration highlighting inclusivity, understanding, and appreciation for diverse abilities. Although high winds altered plans for outdoor activities, the spirit of the day remained strong within the school walls.
Throughout the week leading up to Autism Awareness Day, students engaged in various activities designed to foster connection and awareness. One particularly impactful activity, according to fifth-grader and Student of the Year, Tanner, was getting to know a classmate he hadn’t interacted with before. He shared that stepping out of his comfort zone allowed him to appreciate the unique qualities of his peers.
Tanner also emphasized the inclusive nature of his classroom, where every student is given the opportunity to thrive. Group projects, he noted, allow students to showcase their unique strengths, ensuring that each individual contributes meaningfully. “At ARCA, everyone is included,” he shared, reflecting on the supportive learning environment the school fosters.
ARCA’s commitment to inclusion is evident in its RISE program—short for Reaching Individual Student Excellence. This initiative emphasizes personalized learning plans and a culture of academic and personal achievement. At ARCA, students with autism are not viewed through the lens of disability but rather as individuals with different abilities, each bringing their own strengths to the classroom.
Julia Dupre shared insights about the RISE program, highlighting how it is designed to meet the unique needs of each student by focusing on their strengths and potential. She emphasized that ARCA’s approach ensures that every student receives the support they need to excel, reinforcing the school’s mission of celebrating diverse abilities. Dupre also spoke about the plans for a field trip that would include RISE students from all ARCA campuses, providing them with an opportunity to connect and have a fun outing.
Dr. Erin Marcotte, principal of the 3-5 campus, emphasized the importance of creating an environment where all students feel valued and supported. The goal is to nurture a culture of excellence where every student, regardless of their learning style, has the opportunity to thrive.
While the high winds may have shifted plans, they did not dampen the enthusiasm of students and staff in celebrating a day dedicated to awareness, acceptance, and appreciation for the unique contributions of every learner at ARCA. The school continues to lead by example, ensuring that all students—regardless of their abilities—feel valued and empowered to reach their fullest potential and embrace their unique strengths.
