LAFAYETTE, La. (Dec. 26, 2026) – A family of five lost everything, including their dog, in a house fire Christmas afternoon. At 4:46 p.m., Lafayette firefighters responded to a house fire in the 400 block of Bellot Street. Several neighbors reported the fire after noticing smoke coming from the single-family dwelling.  Firefighters arrived on the scene minutes later. Flames were coming from the front windows of the dwelling. It was initially reported that kids were possibly in the home. After searching the dwelling, firefighters confirmed no one was home. Unfortunately, the family’s dog died in the fire. The home sustained heavy fire damage.

The occupant and her four kids (ages fifteen, eleven, eight, and five) were not home when the fire started. The family left a couple of hours before the fire was reported to visit family. All their belongings, including most Christmas gifts, were destroyed in the fire.

Fire officials determined that the fire originated in the living room. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
