LAFAYETTE, LA (January 8, 2025) – Lafayette firefighters responded to a 911 call at 8:38 a.m. for smoke from a vacant home in the 1100 block of Cameron Street. Firefighters arrived within five minutes to light smoke from the abandoned property. First responders entered the dwelling and discovered a small fire in a bedroom and a male individual sleeping on a mattress. Firefighters awakened the man to remove him from the smoke-filled house. The fire burned a small hole through the floor. The fire damage was contained to that room.

There were obvious signs that the male had been squatting in the vacant dwelling. Two other old fires were found during the investigation. It was unsure what type of open flame caused the damage, likely a candle.

Lafayette Police Department arrived on the scene to assist with trespassing.

Firefighters boarded the door and window before leaving the scene.
