CLARIFICATION UPDATE: Shooting Incident 500 Block of West Gilman Street

July 21, 2023, 2:48 p.m.

Update 2nd Arrest made for 500 W. Gilman Street Homicide

Lafayette, LA – A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the homicide investigation from 07/05/2023, which occurred in the 500 block of West Gilman Street. The suspect is identified as a nineteen-year-old male Zentrell Gardner, of St. Martinville, Louisiana. Zentrell Gardner has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail for one count of 2nd-degree murder and eight counts of attempted 1st-degree murder.

Update (Clarification) July 6, 2023, 11:16 a.m.

Lafayette, LA – After further investigation, Investigators were able to determine only one victim sustained gunshot wounds as a result of yesterday’s shooting. The statement provided yesterday was preliminary and we indicated two victims were shot.  The only victim shot was the deceased as indicated in the update.

July 5, 2023, 8:25 p.m. – Update to Shooting Incident 500 block of West Gilman Street 

Lafayette, LA – The victim that was previously listed as being in critical condition from the 500 block of West Gilman Street has unfortunately died as a result of his injuries from the shooting. The victim is identified as one Kvon O’neil, a twenty-year-old male of Lafayette, Louisiana.

As a result of this homicide investigation, one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. The suspect is a juvenile. The suspect has been arrested for eight counts of attempted 1st-degree murder and one count of accessory after the fact to 2nd-degree murder.

This incident remains under investigation, and additional updates will follow as new leads are developed.

Lafayette, LA – On 07/05/2023 at 1:35 p.m., The Lafayette Police Department responded to the 500 block of West Gilman Street, in reference to a shooting incident. Officers located one victim suffering multiple apparent gunshot wounds to their person. The scene was secured and life saving measures were provided to the victim. The victim was then transported to a local hospital, where they are currently listed as being stable but in critical condition.

It was then determined that just prior to this shooting incident a previous shooting incident occurred at Big Boys Tobacco Plus located at 812 North University Avenue in Lafayette. During this incident, another victim was located with an apparent gunshot wound to their person. This victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Crime scenes have been established, and investigators are on these scenes working to determine investigative leads. Updates shall be provided as new information is developed.
