LAFAYETTE, La. (Dec. 31, 2023, 3:22 p.m.) – At 11:08 a.m. this morning, Lafayette firefighters responded to a house fire in the 100 block of Scenic Drive. The owner of the dwelling called 911 to report his fireplace on fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene, entered the attic, and discovered the chimney smoking. The fire was quickly extinguished. Damage was contained to the attic, roof, and chimney.

The owner lit his fireplace this morning. Shortly afterward, he heard a strange sound from the fireplace and began to smell smoke. He called 911 immediately. The owner used a fire extinguisher to contain the fire until first responders arrived.

The heat from the fireplace ignited combustible material in the metal flue, which spread to the chimney.

The fire was ruled an accident.
