Broussard, LA (May 12, 2026) – Last evening, the Broussard Fire Department held a heartfelt dedication ceremony for its new ladder truck, honoring the memory and legacy of late firefighter Alex J. Bourque.

The ceremony included a traditional push-in ceremony, a longstanding fire service tradition symbolizing the days when firefighters manually pushed apparatus back into the station. Driving the new ladder truck during the ceremony was Lafayette Fire Department Engineer Joshua Bourque, Alex’s older brother, making the moment especially meaningful for family, friends, and fellow firefighters in attendance.
Alex Bourque began his fire service career with the Lafayette Fire Department in 2015 and joined the Broussard Fire Department in 2017, serving both departments during his career. He courageously battled bone cancer before passing away on May 11, 2022, at the age of 25. He is survived by his wife, two young sons, his parents, retired Assistant Chief Michael Bourque and Emy Bourque, and numerous family members, friends, and colleagues.
The department’s new ladder truck, designated Truck 23, was delivered on Monday, May 4, 2026. Special tributes were incorporated into the truck’s design to ensure Bourque’s memory remains part of the department he loved. A decal on both sides of the truck reads, “Never Forget Alex,” accompanied by a firefighter’s helmet. The yellow accents were intentionally chosen to represent bone cancer awareness, while a silhouette of Bourque was placed on one of the truck’s compartment doors.
Fire Chief Bryan Champagne and Assistant Chief Justin Denais spoke during the dedication about both the significance of the new apparatus and the impact Bourque had on the department.
Denais shared that from the time Bourque joined the department, he was always eager not only to help but also to teach those interested in learning.
“Alex, this one is for you,” Champagne said during his remarks.
Joshua Bourque also addressed those gathered, sharing words about his brother and the meaning behind the tribute.
The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner. Deacon Jules Breaux of Sacred Heart Catholic Church offered a blessing.
In a deeply emotional tribute, the ceremonial bell was rung four times, with each ring representing one year since Bourque’s passing.
Commemorative plaques were presented to Bourque’s family during the ceremony in honor of his service, sacrifice, and lasting legacy.
Family members, fellow firefighters, department leadership, and community supporters gathered to remember a man whose passion for service left a lasting impact.
Though gone too soon, Bourque’s legacy continues through the Broussard Fire Department, where his commitment, courage, and willingness to serve others will never be forgotten.
